Using Periscope for Your Business by William Wilson
TLDR: What makes Periscope effective is the same thing that makes other social media effective: make genuine connections.
So how do you market a brand, to get this kind of benefit?
Meerkat and Periscope did the same thing but Periscope won the branding battle, and made Meerkat obsolete.
To understand how to use Periscope, you need to ask: "How do I use social media, in general?" Some people think you just do social media "when you have time." That won't work. You really need to dedicate yourself to social media. The same is true for Periscope.
What do you like about Periscope?
It's live and spontaneous.
You can connect with people that you normally don't get to connect with. This is ultimately what social media is about. Everyone wants to belong to some sort of community. Social media helps with this. As a business, you want this kind of connection with your customers.
If you've communicated with someone over social media, it can make people feel like they know you. Now you can build that relationship. Periscope allows you to do this in real-time.
What is Periscope?
Periscope is a live-feed video. It's like Skyping with anyone who wants to watch you. Usually you broadcast this through your Twitter account- so people know you're "Scoping" at that time. The recording of the video will stay on Periscope for 24 hours- although some services will allow you to save the video for longer.
If you were in real estate, you could scope a tour of the house. It's like a real-time virtual tour of the home. People can share the link to this video with their followers.
Some people will announce that they are "going live on Periscope" before broadcasting, so people know to tune-in.
People can chat with you while you're doing the Scope.
How to Periscope:
1. Introduce yourself
2. Start to talk about your topic. You might ask people to hold their questions (through chat) until the end.
What is the best type of thing to do on Periscope?
Content is king. Some people beg for "hearts" or ask you to share it, before even getting to the content.
Don't treat it like a commercial. Add value. Provide something of value to your followers.
Tips for Using Periscope
1. Be patient. You need to build a following. This doesn't happen over night.
2. Always title your scope. Make it interesting- like the news. It should catch someone's attention. It should be a teaser.
3. Get to your content ASAP. People have other things to do.
How do you determine if a Scope was effective?
How many people watched it. How long they watched it. How any people engaged with you.
How can Periscope help grow your business?
It can generate brand awareness.
Where should you go, if you have limited time? Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Periscope?
Go to the place with the most fish.
