Modern Customers are Self-Directing

66-90% of a buyer's journey is self directed. Customers, today, think: "I can find the information I need, when I need it." They don't need sales people to hold their hand through the process, like they once might have needed.

Modern Customers Demand a Personal Experience

Gone are the days of mass marketing. Now people want to shop "where everyone knows your name."

So how do we, as marketers, become the stewards of the customer's journey? By following the Five Principles of modern marketing (or, the A, B, Cs of marketing):
  1. Market to people As individuals
    • Speak the right language to the right audience
    • You need to know your audience, in order to do this
    • Consider which channels they would prefer
  2. Based on what they do
    • Different customers do different things
    • They also use or prefer different channels
  3. Continuously over time
    • Think long term, life cycle
    • Grab customers ad different points along the way
  4. Directed toward an outcome
    • You might have different outcomes for different people
    • Make sure you know the outcome for each
  5. Everywhere they are
